Short Term Rental Direct vs Houfy
Houfy comes up in the same conversations as this product, so it gets a straight answer. The two are different kinds of thing. Houfy is a live marketplace with guests searching it directly. This is not a marketplace, on purpose, and never will be. That difference decides who should pick which.
What each one actually is
Houfy is a traveler facing marketplace bundled with host tools. Guests search Houfy itself for a property. Hosts get free listings, an AI website builder, calendar sync with Airbnb and Vrbo, and their own Stripe or PayPal integration. Houfy takes 0 percent commission on most bookings. It is not small or dead: it lists itself at over 98,000 properties.
Short Term Rental Direct is only the booking and payment machinery, with no guest discovery layer, on purpose. It has no search, no directory, and no browsing. Running a real marketplace means real trust and safety spend and real marketplace facilitator tax exposure in multiple states, and we decided not to take that on. The tradeoff is direct. Houfy can bring you a guest who has never heard of you. We can't. We only convert the guest who already has: a past guest, a referral, someone who found you somewhere else and would rather book with you than pay a platform fee.
The price, at your actual unit count
Houfy prices per listing. It is free to start, with an optional Lite plan at $7.99 per listing a month or Premium at $11.99 per listing a month. This product charges a flat price per account, so the bill stays put as you add units. At a low unit count, Houfy is flatly cheaper, sometimes by a lot, and it stays cheaper until your unit count passes a real threshold.
| Units | Our tier | Our price | Houfy Lite | Houfy Premium | Cheaper on price alone |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Solo | $79 | $8 | $12 | Houfy |
| 3 | Solo | $79 | $24 | $36 | Houfy |
| 10 | Studio | $199 | $80 | $120 | Houfy |
| 20 | Unlimited | $349 | $160 | $240 | Houfy |
| 30 | Unlimited | $349 | $240 | $360 | Roughly even against Premium |
| 44 | Unlimited | $349 | $352 | $528 | Roughly even against Lite |
| 50 | Unlimited | $349 | $400 | $599 | Us |
| 100 | Unlimited | $349 | $799 | $1,199 | Us, by a lot |
Houfy figures are its own published per listing pricing, $7.99 (Lite) and $11.99 (Premium) per listing per month, checked 25 August 2026. Our figures are the founding rates from the front page.
Plainly: below roughly 30 units, Houfy's paid plans are cheaper than ours on subscription price alone, and its free tier is cheaper than ours at any unit count. If monthly price is the only thing you are optimizing, and you don't need what a flat bill buys at scale, Houfy is a legitimate answer. Price it out before you pay us.
What the price does not show
Price is only part of the decision. A per listing bill misses three things.
- On Houfy's paid plans the bill grows with your portfolio. Every unit you add raises the monthly charge for good. Our top tier is flat, so growing past the crossover point in the table above stops being a line item you renegotiate.
- Houfy brings discovery and we don't. If a meaningful share of your bookings has to come from people who have never heard of you, that is Houfy's job, and this product doesn't do it at all. Paying us instead of Houfy for that would be paying for something we don't offer.
- Neither of us holds your money. Both products route payment through your own Stripe (or, on Houfy, PayPal or Square) instead of acting as merchant of record. That part is genuinely similar, and neither of us is unique on it.
The actual reason to pick this over Houfy
Houfy is still a marketplace, and a marketplace puts your listing in a room with everyone else's. That is the real reason to pick this instead, more often than price. A guest searching Houfy for a property near yours sees other properties on the same page, ordered by Houfy's own search and recommendation logic, not by you. Free removes the fee for being in the room. It doesn't remove the room.
A booking site built on this product has no other listing on it. The guest who lands there came looking for you: a past guest, a referral, someone who already found you somewhere else. There is nothing else on the page to click instead. It is the same argument we make against every listing site, Houfy included: paying to appear somewhere is not the same as owning the moment a guest decides to book.
If most of your bookings have to come from people who have never heard of you, that argument doesn't help, and Houfy's discovery is the more honest answer. If most already come from people who have, the room full of other listings is a cost even when your own listing is free.
Can I use both?
Probably yes, and for a lot of operators that is the right answer, not a consolation prize. A free or Lite Houfy listing costs little and can bring you a guest who would never have found you otherwise. What you do with that guest once they know you exist (the repeat booking, the referral, the direct relationship) is what this product is built for. The two don't do the same job.
Who this page is not fair to
We haven't used Houfy. This page is built from its own published site and pricing, not a trial account. If something above is wrong or has changed, email hello@shorttermrentaldirect.com and we'll fix it instead of defending it.
